Elizar Perla is a recently retired catburglar who has succumbed to the temptation of one final score. The target is David Gray, Famous for his collection of art and other rarities. Soon after the job, Elizar disappears, leaving his daughter Marty distraught. Desperate, Gray approaches Marty suggesting that her father will turn up as soon as the stolen artwork is recovered. She begrudgingly accepts the offer to help him locate the art, but all is not as it seems, as the rarest of stolen pieces has value beyond ordinary currency.

David Mamet takes this story of thieves along many twists and turns, some of which work and some of which don’t. Gene Hackman plays the brilliant leader of a gang (Delroy Lindo, Ricky Jay & Rebecca Pigeon as Hackman’s youngish wife), which pulls off complex heists for a despicable fence (Danny DeVito). After stiffing the gang on a jewelry robbery, DeVito forces the gang to go after a Swiss gold shipment and to use his nephew (Sam Rockwell) in the crime. No one trusts anyone and every step is shaded with the unexpected.

A couple (King and Chen) returns to North America for a family funeral, having lived in Shanghai, China for the previous six years. Loosely based on a ’50’s movie of the same name, it tells the story of two young orphan boys who travel by themselves from the Old country to join their father’s family in Canada. There they encounter their stern disciplinarian grandfather who has alienated himself from some of his neighbors. There is particularly no love lost between the grandfather and his Dutch neighbors, who he generalizes as being responsible for his son’s death in the Boor War. A side product of this animosity is that it is keeping apart the boy’s aunt and her Dutch doctor suitor. The two boys change everything though when they find a young baby on the beach…
